Should you be selling when the world is on fire?

Hello Reader,

Whether you follow politics and world news as part of your daily life or not, it's pretty hard to miss some of the awful things going on in the World right now. The Epstein Files in particular, have brought to light some terrible crimes against some of the most vulnerable people, including children.

It's hard to carry on as normal without the weight of the world making life and business feel heavy. And as a business owner, Reader, you wouldn't be alone if you've been questioning whether it's an appropriate time to promote your offers to people.

Only you can decide whether you feel you have the emotional and cognitive capacity to be selling and delivering your offers at the moment, but I want to reassure you that it is not inherently wrong to continue marketing you business if you feel willing and able to do so.

The issues at play are largely born of systemic imbalances of power, which are typically fuelled by the wealth of the few. Continuing to promote your offers isn't going to directly address these deep-rooted issues but by ensuring your own needs are met you will be in a stronger position to contribute to social change and mutual aid.

Here are some ideas for ways to use your income to support a better world if making money is accessible and aligned for you right now:

  • buying extra food and donating it to food banks
  • donating money to charities that support abuse survivors
  • shopping at local and/or minority-owned business
  • buying books + toys that celebrate diversity for the children in your life
  • invest in supportive tools or labour so that you can dedicate more time to community projects
  • invest in micro-loans for entrepreneurs and families around the world looking create sustainable incomes for themselves and their communities (for example, Kiva)

If you have other suggestions, I'd love to hear them - just hit reply.

If I get enough I'll create a blog post about all the ways we can use our businesses and our income to fuel social change.

From Laila with love ❤️

P.S. Throughout February I'm offer my new Offer Clarity call to ensure your offers are designed to deliver both impact and income. Book now.

Hello Reader, This week seems to have lasted longer than the whole of January and yet somewhere I’ve still not managed to get everything done that I planned to - can you relate, Reader? It’s been the last week before half term for the kids so they’ve been that challenging mix of excited and exhausted as they’ve juggled a school disco, a ‘bring a cuddly toy to school’ day, and being too overtired to actually get to sleep at bedtime. So it felt like a fair assumption that my snail-like pace has...

Hello Reader, Today's email is very practical in nature, I want to to share the steps you can take when you're offer isn't making the sales you were hoping for. Picture the scene - you've mapped out your offer, it's all set up ready to deliver to people and you've been actively promoting it, but... crickets. The first thing I want to say is that this has nothing to do with who you are as a person and you don't suck at business. While you might feel like running and hiding under your duvet...

Hello Reader, In last week’s email I talked about Autistic Advocates and Allyship after the announcement of the new Autistic Barbie. And I shared an example of someone who I believed was speaking over Autistic voices. But now I want to tell you that I made a mistake. Not about the importance of letting members of marginalised communities lead conversations that are about them, I stand by that - but about the individual’s identity. After an initial exchange, (and after I had already sent my...
